What can biotech recruitment tell us about where the industry is heading?

One of the more interesting signals I’ve noticed over the past six months isn't coming from a funding announcement or an M&A headline.

It’s coming from recruitment.

I’ve seen a significant increase in demand for Medical and Clinical talent, and I’m currently supporting a number of opportunities in these areas, despite this historically being a smaller part of my own market.

At the same time, my traditional area of expertise, Technical Operations, remains a more challenging market.

That raises an interesting question: is this simply a reflection of increased biotech investment?

There is certainly a case for it. Global biotech VC investment increased significantly through 2025, with capital increasingly focused on clinically de-risked assets. Vision Lifesciences’ 2026 Biotech Venture Capital Guide

But I wonder if there is something more structural happening.

As biotech companies become increasingly comfortable outsourcing manufacturing and development activities to CDMOs and other specialist partners, do they need to build the same depth of internal Tech Ops infrastructure as they historically did?

Perhaps the modern biotech operating model is becoming more asset-centric and partnership-led, with internal teams increasingly concentrated around the activities that create the greatest value: clinical development, regulatory strategy, scientific leadership and ultimately commercialisation.

Secondly, the appetite for fractional or part time consultants both at leadership and IC has increase dramatically, perhaps as a result of stretched funding runways, or lack of clarity at where the next raise will come from. Or, just as likely, a lower appetite for seven figure annual CxO costs.

If so, recruitment patterns could be telling us something important about how the biotech company of the future is being built.

Is this a temporary funding-cycle effect, or a structural shift in the biotech operating model? Also, what is the biggest area of growth for you over the next 12 months?
